In December we submitted a report “D3.1 Description of the socio-ecological system for each Living Lab”. This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the social-ecological systems (SES) in six (6) European Living Labs (LLs): Badajoz (Spain), Bergen (Norway), Gdańsk (Poland), Leipzig (Germany), Sligo (Ireland), and Zakynthos (Greece).
During this work, we examined the structure and dynamics of these systems, with a focus on identifying the focal action situations (FAS) within each region. These FAS are central to addressing the most pressing
climate adaptation challenges in the local contexts, offering PRO-CLIMATE researchers’ critical insights on how to tailor strategies for tackling climate change in diverse social and ecological environments.
By utilizing Ostrom’s SES framework, the report provides a structured understanding of the interactions among human actors, governance structures, and the environment, which will inform the development of localized and participatory climate adaptation strategies. The methodology follows a three-step process:
- first, it identifies subsystems within each SES, focusing on users, resources, and governance;
- second, it selects relevant second-tier variables to deepen the analysis of local dynamics; and
- third, it develops a standardized SES framework to facilitate comparisons
across the Living Labs.
Additionally, the FAS framework is employed to identify key action areas where stakeholders, such as local governments, businesses, and citizens, converge to address climate challenges. The FAS analysis helps highlight critical areas for intervention and policy development, particularly in the context of participatory governance.
