The strategic objective of PRO-CLIMATE is to support communities to proactively adapt to climate change through social transformation and behavioural change. To achieve this, PRO-CLIMATE will identify social tipping points and policy actions that enable systemic transformation to be achieved across social systems.

Our Living Labs
In our case studies we will run Living Labs to gather stakeholders and organise focus groups and workshops to understand community governance and institutional structures, and to also pilot and validate the project’s behaviour change activities.
Sligo, Ireland
Located in the Border Region with Northern Ireland, UK Sligo is the largest town in the county, with a population of 22,560. The population of the county was 65,535 in 2016.
Leipzig, Germany
The most populous city in Saxony and 8th in Germany, it has 624,689 inhabitants. Leipzig is a growing city: 51,834 people moved here in 2022.
Badajoz, Spain
Badajoz is a NUTS3 region, located in the south-west of Spain. Its population is 672.137 inhabitants, population decline is a protracted trend and has a low population density (29 inhabitants/km2).
Bergen, Norway
West coast of Norway, fjorded mountainous landscape. V estland has a population of 638,821 (2021) of which 285,900 live in the capital, Bergen, Norway’s second largest city.
Gdansk, Poland
Inhabited by 486,000 people, it is one of the largest cities in northern Poland and the Baltic Sea Region. As a result of the Ukrainian-Russian war, the number of inhabitants increased to 618,000.
Zakynthos, Greece
Zakynthos is the third largest of the Ionian islands and it covers an area of 405.55 km2. The resident population amounts to 40,759 though this number rises considerably during summer.

Preliminary Steps Toward Establishing the Leipzig Living Lab

Mérida Hosts First Physical Workshop to Launch Living Lab for Climate Adaptation in Badajoz Province
On March 25-26, 2025, the city of Mérida became the meeting point for regional and international experts, institutions, and local stakeholders as part of the first physical workshop to initiate the creation of a Living Lab (LL) in the Badajoz province, under the umbrella of the PRO-CLIMATE project. Living Lab Workshop in Zakynthos Tackles Sustainable Tourism and Climate Resilience
A Living Lab (LL) workshop was held in Zakynthos, Greece, in February as part of the PRO-CLIMATE Project. The two-day workshop brought together local stakeholders related to tourism, academia, civil society and other community representatives to address the island’s most pressing climate change related challenges, with a focus on sustainable tourism and climate resilience. The event was led by researchers from Co-opAbility Institute (Greece) together with the Environmental Science Department at Atlantic Technological University (Ireland).

Third PRO-CLIMATE project meeting @ Badajoz
On February 4-5, 2025, the PRO-CLIMATE consortium gathered in Badajoz, Spain, for its 3rd project meeting, hosted by Diputacion de Badajoz. The meeting brought together all PRO-CLIMATE partners to review the project’s progress, address emerging challenges, and plan the next steps. A welcome speech was delivered by the Deputy of Rural Development, Demographic Challenge, and Tourism in Diputacion de Badajoz, emphasising the importance of collaborative climate adaptation efforts at the local and regional levels.
Description of the Socio-ecological system for each LL
In December we submitted a report “D3.1 Description of the socio-ecological system for each Living Lab”. This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the social-ecological systems (SES) in six (6) European Living Labs (LLs): Badajoz (Spain), Bergen (Norway), Gdańsk (Poland), Leipzig (Germany), Sligo (Ireland), and Zakynthos (Greece).
