Proactive community adaptation to climate change through social transformation and behavioural change

Young Voices for Climate Action: Extremadura Youth Shape the Future of Climate Adaptation

On April 17, 2026, young people from across Extremadura who are members of the Extremadura Youth Council (CJEX) gathered for a participatory workshop organized by PRO-CLIMATE to share their views on climate change and seek real solutions. The co-creation session, held during the II Youth Leadership Conference for a Sustainable Future in Puebla de Obando (Badajoz), provided an open and dynamic space where participants learned about the PRO-CLIMATE project and were able to reflect on how climate change is already affecting their daily lives.

For many of them, climate change is not a distant issue – it’s something they experience every day. From coping with extreme heat to changes in leisure activities, rising energy use or concerns about water availability, participants highlighted how these challenges are becoming part of their routine. They also pointed to a lack of adaptation in some local environments and questioned unsustainable consumption and production models.

The workshop quickly moved from identifying problems to thinking about solutions. Participants shared ideas on how to encourage more sustainable behaviours, including awareness campaigns, practical workshops and incentives to promote responsible habits. Simple actions (like choosing local products, reducing resource use or using more sustainable transport) were seen as key starting points.

Digital tools and social media also stood out as powerful ways to connect with young people. Participants highlighted the role of influencers and online campaigns in spreading messages and inspiring change. There was also a strong message about working together. Young people emphasised the need for collaboration between public institutions, schools, businesses and communities to make climate action more effective and visible.

Overall, the session showed that young people are ready to be part of the solution. With the right support and opportunities, they can play a leading role in building more sustainable and climate-resilient communities.
