Proactive community adaptation to climate change through social transformation and behavioural change

In PRO-CLIMATE we aim at fostering significant and sustainable transformative change within the projects’ six (6) Living Lab communities. By the end of September (M9), we successfully submitted “D4.1 Communication protocols for engagement during the change process”. In D4.1 we present the framework for establishing effective communication protocols that ensure stakeholder engagement throughout the change process. These protocols are designed to drive behavioural change and enhance good governance, which are essential for achieving climate resilience in the identified social-ecological systems (SESs).

The communication protocols developed are grounded in the key idea of extreme citizens science (ECS), including methods such as the Bristol Approach.  Extreme citizens science enable the identification of social tipping points, placing emphasis on community-led initiatives and inclusive participation as critical drivers of meaningful climate action.

Behavioural change

The focus on behavioural change includes setting clear expectations, identifying challenges, and fostering collaboration to promote sustainable practices.

Good governance

Good governance underpins the entire PRO-CLIMATE approach, characterised by transparency, inclusivity, and accountability. This is achieved through structured communication channels, broad stakeholder involvement, and partnerships that span various sectors.

Engagement strategy

Our engagement strategy is threefold, consisting of:

  1. Formal Monthly Meetings: Bringing together Change Agents to discuss governance and thematic issues, actively driving the behavioural change process within the six Living Labs.
  2. Regular Email Correspondence: Offering continuous support and tailored coordination to meet the specific needs of Change Agents.
  3. Workshops: Providing platforms for knowledge exchange, the development of Change Champions, and the implementation of local climate resilience programs.

Overall, in PRO-CLIMATE we seek to empower communities by leveraging local knowledge and encouraging active participation. Our inclusive approach ensures that all stakeholders have a voice in decision-making processes, leading to more effective and lasting climate solutions. By building local capacity and promoting inclusivity, we aim to address climate challenges, enhance resilience, and contribute to a more sustainable future for all involved.
